Pdf Summary
This study compared two next-generation scatter radiation shielding systems used in catheterization laboratories: Rampart IC and EggNest Complete. Using an anthropomorphic phantom and six fixed measurement points around an imaging table, the researchers measured scatter radiation under three conditions: no shielding, Rampart IC, and EggNest Complete, across multiple fluoroscopic angulations.

Key findings showed that scatter radiation was unevenly distributed, with higher exposure at the head of the bed and on the left side of the table. Both shielding systems significantly reduced radiation at the primary operator and assistant positions compared with no shielding. However, EggNest Complete provided broader protection: it significantly reduced exposure at the head-of-bed positions and the nursing position, where Rampart IC did not. In these areas, EggNest Complete produced about an 80% lower average scatter level than Rampart IC.

Across all standard x-ray angulations, including caudal and cranial views, the pattern remained consistent. Rampart IC mainly protected staff positions caudal to its shield, while EggNest Complete offered more uniform shielding around the table and at different heights.

The authors conclude that both systems are effective for protecting the main operator and assistant, but EggNest Complete gives superior all-around protection for the entire cath lab team. They argue that this broader coverage is important because modern cath lab procedures involve multiple staff members in different positions. The study was performed with a phantom rather than human patients, so clinical confirmation is still needed.
