Overview

Mechanical thrombectomy has emerged as an adjunctive therapy to anticoagulation for patients with acute intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism (PE). This prospective study evaluated the safety and efficacy of percutaneous mechanical aspiration thrombectomy with autologous blood reinfusion using the next-generation AVENTUS Thrombectomy System in patients with acute intermediate-risk PE. This discussion reviews the clinical rationale for thrombectomy in intermediate-risk PE and explores early experience and outcomes with the AVENTUS system. Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  1. Evaluate the results of the AVENTUS Trial
  2. Demonstrate the procedural steps for safe autologous blood reinfusion during thrombectomy
  3. Interpret functional and quality-of-life metrics following thrombectomy in PE patients
  4. Formulate treatment plans that incorporate thrombectomy for intermediate-risk PE
