Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:​

  1. Compare indications for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR).
  2. List requirements for building an ECMO program in a cardiac catheterization laboratory or intensive care unit (ICU).
  3. Discuss patient selection for ECMO.
  4. Plan when to wean patients from ECMO, transition to another therapy, or withdraw care.
  5. Analyze a case in which a patient required ECMO therapy.
