Finding Our Way in the Dark: Hard Outcomes & Us

Thursday, January 30, 2025
6 pm ET / 5 pm CT / 4 pm MT / 3 pm PT

While a life in medicine can be deeply rewarding, it is also often peppered by emotional and spiritual challenges.  Too often, our experiences in relation to unexpected hard patient outcomes go unacknowledged, leaving us vulnerable to lasting deep injury. Join Dr. Stacia Dearmin for an intimate conversation about the experience of the healer faced with an unforeseen, painful outcome. Together, we'll explore that experience and how humans courageous enough to care for other humans can heal when things don't go as planned.

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Define the term "second victim" and elaborate on its application to people working in healthcare.
  • Identify the two factors all second victims have in common.
  • Describe the three paths of recovery for second victims and the most important factor to full healing.

Although medical malpractice litigation is common in the US, most physicians and other healthcare professionals find themselves feeling isolated and ill-equipped when it happens to them. Join Dr. Stacia Dearmin to explore both the personal experience and the basic mechanics of med mal lawsuits with an eye toward concrete steps one can take to navigate this difficult terrain with success.

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Specify three steps physicians/healthcare professionals should take in the event of a difficult patient outcome which may result in a lawsuit
  • Describe the nature and purpose of deposition in civil litigation in the US
  • Identify 3 of the top qualities malpractice defense lawyers seek in the defendants they serve

Faculty

Dr. Stacia Dearmin is an internationally-recognized speaker and ICF-certified professional coach who supports and inspires physicians and other healthcare providers facing adverse patient outcomes and malpractice litigation.

A graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, she spent 25 years in bedside practice, learning and teaching. Life in the pediatric emergency department taught her how hard difficult outcomes and med mal lawsuits can be for compassionate professionals.

This knowledge led her to found Thrive in 2017, where she works to relieve pain and isolation among physicians and other healers confronted with the toughest experience many will ever have.
